Catching Up

Erin

“So then I looked her straight in the eyes and I tell her if she’s going to keep being a bitch then she might as well forget about ever going to another party with us again,” Heather said.

I snorted. Which caused some of the lo mein I’d been eating to spit out on the plate. But whatever.

I looked up, self-conscious and wondering if Heather would see that and think it was gross. But she was laughing right along with me.

That felt good. This whole thing felt good. It was amazing how quickly we’d picked up right where we left off back in the day.

“No,” I said, shaking my head.

“No?” Heather asked.

“I don’t believe you actually said that to Steph,” I said.

“Why not?”

“That’s the sort of thing that would get you on her shit list,” she said. “And nobody wants to be on her shit list.”

“Those are big words coming from somebody who’s been doing a bunch of stuff that’s going to make you numero uno on her shit list,” Heather said, pointing a crab rangoon at me.

I blushed and looked down and away. I’m not sure why I was blushing and looking away from her. Just that it felt like a situation where I should be blushing.

“That’s different,” I said.

“Oh?” she asked. “Please. Tell me how it’s different.”

She dipped that crab rangoon she was using to threaten me into some sweet and sour sauce, and that gave me a minute to think about it.

How was it different?

“I mean when you stood up to her…”

Again I was at a loss for words. How was it different? I didn’t know.

“I was threatening to beat the crap out of her,” I said with a shrug. “You’re standing up to her because you’re Heather.”

“Well yes, I am Heather,” she said, arching an eyebrow. “But what does that have to do with anything?”

“I mean you’re you,” I said. “You can get away with that kind of stuff. You’re like the most popular and beautiful girl in the school.”

“The most popular and beautiful girl in the school?” she asked.

She arched an eyebrow at me. And I immediately blushed. Me and my big mouth. Me and letting my mouth run ahead of my brain, for that matter.

“You know what I mean,” I said, blushing even more now.

“No, I’m not sure I know what you mean,” she said, leaning forward.

There was a twinkle in her eye. It was intense. That look said she was very interested in hearing what I wasn’t saying. I sighed. I hated this. I hated that I was letting my mouth run ahead of my brain getting me into all sorts of trouble.

“Come on, Heather,” I said with another sigh. “You have to know.”

“Pretend for a moment that I don’t know,” she said. “Explain it to me.”

“Everybody either wants to be you or wants to be with you,” I said. “That’s the kind of stuff that lets you get away with stuff, you know?”

“I’m not so sure about that,” she said with a shrug.
